Abstract

Bedsores are a hidden yet critical problem in society. Elderly, stroke, coma, spinal cord injury, and other immobile patients commonly face this issue. Dead cells formed due to continuous pressure, elevated bed surface temperature, and moisture (from sweat or urine) are the main causes of these wounds. This project aims to prevent bedsores by controlling these factors, thereby reducing caregiver involvement and promoting faster patient recovery.

The designed bed cover minimises continuous pressure on the skin and maintains the bed surface temperature below the recommended 33.4 °C. It is designed for single beds and divided into six sections, each controlling temperature and pressure individually through an air-flow mechanism. This allows high-risk areas to be treated directly. High-temperature zones are identified and cooled automatically. Pre-set pressure-reducing air patterns help regulate both pressure and temperature while also reducing sweat formation.

The system can detect room temperature and connect to an external cooler to further lower surface heat. It operates in two modes: a general mode for single-bed use and a networked mode suitable for hospitals and multi-bed healthcare centres. In the interconnected setup, multiple bed covers are operated through a single air compressor.

This intelligent bed cover offers an efficient, automated, and affordable solution to prevent bedsores, improving patient comfort and reducing caregiver workload.
