Joan McCann

From Curiosity to Creativity: How Kids Learn to Code

In this talk, Joan explores how curiosity and creativity drive the way children learn to code. Growing up in a digital age surrounded by technology, many young people are skilled users but rarely understand how it all works. Joan discusses how coding transforms them from passive consumers into active creators, helping them think critically, solve problems, and approach technology with curiosity and confidence. Drawing on her experience in the software industry and in schools across Ireland, she highlights how making coding accessible and fun can empower the next generation of digital creators.

Joan McCann is the founder of The Code Lab, a multi-award-winning STEM education provider inspiring young learners to be creative with technology. With a background in software development and eight years’ experience designing and delivering coding programmes for schools and community groups, Joan is passionate about making coding fun, accessible, and engaging for all. Through initiatives such as her Primary Schools Coding Programme, Girls Can Code! initiative, and Code@Home online lessons, she helps children and teens develop problem-solving skills, nurture creativity, and build confidence through coding. Her mission is simple: to inspire and empower the next generation of digital creators.
